FIRE AT DEVONPORT.

LARGE STUDIO BURNED.

LOSSES OF PHOTOGRAPHER.

A large photographic studio in Victoria Road, Devonport, owned by Mr. G. Yaile. was gutted l\v fire at midnight on Saturday, two other business premises in the same block of buildings being also slightly damaged. The block, which is in the centre of the main shopping district, is owned hv the. / Hon. E. W. Alison, M.L.C., and Mr. A. Alison. ( The fire broke out. at the back of Iho building on the. upper floor, where the studio is situated, and had evidently been smouldering for some hours before it was discovered. When the glass roof of the studio was broken by the heat the flames burst out, the fire casting a glare which attracted attention in various parts of the citv.

The Dcvonport brigade-was able to confine tho flames almost entirely to the studio, three other rooms occupied by Mr. Vaile on the same floor of the building being only slightly damaged. Mr. Vaile lost all his apparatus and much of his stock of material. lho fire also spread downward to the back of two shops on the ground floor, penetrating the bookseller's premises of Mrs. F. C. Wilson and damaging a back room, while part of tho stock was damaged bv smoke and water. A wall in the pork-butchery shop of Messrs. Williamson and Jackson was slightly burned. Mr. Vaile's apparatus was insured for £2OO, while the insurances on Messrs. Williamson and Jackson's effects totalled £950. The building was insured. FRANKTON OUTBREAK. NURSING HOME IN DANGER. [from our own cokrespondent.l HAMILTON, Sunday. Damage to the extent of £75 resulted from a fire in an 11-roomed nursing home, occupied by Nurse L. Silvester, in Lake Road, Frankton, at an early hour this morning. r l he house was not occupied at the time, Nurse Silvester being at a hospital. A smart save was effected by the Hamilton Fire Brigade, which confined' the outbreak in the vicinity of its origin, in a hot-water cupboard. The building and contents were insured in the Atlas Office for £9OO and £SOO respectively.
