COST OF AN ELECTION.
ABOUT £9OO FOR RIVER TRUST.An item of about, £9OO, being the estimated cost, of the biennial election to b# held in January next, caused some dissuasion at a meeting of the Waimakarin River Trust in Christchurch last week,' when the estimates for next financial year were under consideration. Mr. J. H.\ Blackwell said that £9OO seemed a terrific amount to spend on an election. The chairman, Mr. J. Wood, said that it wa« proposed in a bill that was shelved last year that the trust election should be held, in May at the samo time as the county elections. If that were don© there would be some saving in expense. "The biggest trouble," said Mr. Manhire, chairman of the finance committee, "is not the cost of the poll but the expense of preparing the rolls. That amounts to about £6OO of the total of £9OO, and the worst feature is that thes# rolls may not be required. If the nominations closed a month before the date of the poll the cost of printing the rolls could be saved if there were no contests. •
