BAIN IN CANTERBURY.
BOON AISfD A BLESSING. Koine of the present-day difficulties in farming wore referred to by tlio president, of the Ashburton Agricultural and Pastoral Association, Mr. H. C. Barton, at the annual meeting last week. Tho circumstances of the past year, apart from low prices, he said, had been aggravated by one of the severest dry spells .on record. The recent rains had been a boon and a blessing to man and beast and the whole countryside had quickly responded. The dry weather had affected, especially in lighter cropping land, the yield of cereals. Nevertheless, considering tho circumstances, the average yield was fairlv good and one heard on all sides of the excellent samples of wheat. In this respect it was a great improvement on last season.
