PROTEST BY LABOUR.
ARBITRATION AND WAGES. DEMONSTRATION IN DOMAIN. A mass meeting to protest against the proposed amendments to tho Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration -Act ar| d against further wages cuts was held in the Domain yesterday afternoon. About 5000 people were present, the gathering being addressed by trades union leaders and officials of the Post and Telegraph Association and Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants.
Several loud-speakers were installed at points in the Domain, the grandstand being used as a platform. In conjunction with the demonstration the Auckland Waterside Workers' Band marched from the chief post office to the Domain, but there was no following procession. The gathering, which was of an orderly nature, contained a number of unemployed, who unfurled banners and displayed them throughout the meeting. The speakers condemned any interference with the Arbitration Act. stating that it would be an attack upon the standard of living. The following resolution was carried: "That this meeting of Auckland citizens protests against the Government's intention to amend the Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration Act in the manner proposed and its expressed intention to impose a further cut in the civil servants' wages and salaries, and calls upon all persons concerned to support their national organisations in any combined resistance that may be deemed necessary."
