WOMEN'S INSTITUTES.
Whakatane.—The first meeting ot th* year was hold in the Parish H;:II nn Tuesday, February 2. Mrs. Johnson presiding. Two demonstrations of how to make rafli.a trays and' glove-making wera civen by Mrs. Johnson and Mrs. Stewart. A competition, four varieties of biscuits, was won by Mrs. Stewart. 1; Miss Ramson, 2: Mrs. Canning. 3. A competition was also won by Mrs. Prideaux and Mrs. Srnedky. The hostesses wer# Mesdames W. Armstrong, A. -Bridger, W. Bridger and Canning. Manna.—The monthly meeting was held at the Mauru tenuis courts, Mrs, Wilson presiding. At the commencement of the proceedings a vote of condolence with Mrs. Sioune was carried. The Girl Guides were the guests of the day, and, after partaking of afternoon tea, gava some delightful folk dancing items, for which they were accorded a special vot« of thanks. Tennis and croquet were also indulged in. The singing of the" National Anthem brought the meeting to a conclusion. Ruatangata.—The monthly meeting was held in the Ruatangata Hail, Mrs. Yates j presiding. An enjoyable flower competition was won by jUiss Clarice Yates. Afternoon tea was provided-by the hostesses. Mesdames Yates, Shepherd and Birdling. \ - Otakiri.—The Febrjiarv meeting was held last week, the president, Mrs. Murray, presiding- read an instructive article on "Goitre and its Prevention." which evoked keen interest. The competition, a vase of flowers, arranged for effect, was won by Mrs. Keir, Mrs. Tucker being second and Mrs. Jessup third*. The roll-call was " Sine, say or a penny pay." Afternoon tea Avag served by the hostesses, Mrs. Keir, Mrs. Jessup and Miss -Windleocrn. Kamo.—The monthly meeting was held at the residence of Mrs. A. 1% Young, president of the branch. The afternoon was to have taken the form of a garden party, but, as the weather was not favourable, most of the time was spent indoors. Several vocal items were rendered and much appreciated. "_? Tn munitv singing was induced i", and * competition was won by a ■ Mrs. Boyd. The singing of Auld Lan# Syne " concluded the afternoon.
