CARGEN'S HURDLES WIN. TWO PROMISING NEWCOMERS. WOODFUL AND CHIEF LAP. - The presence in the field of several.jumping recruits gave special interest to the Tirau Hack Hardies, for which Hit the Deck was favourite over Careen and \Yhakama. Standfast and Lord Snow. Standfast then took the lead, but Careen immediately challenged and led him into the straight. Standfast made a good effort. in the run home, hut Cargen safely held him off to win by half-a-length. Sports King was two lengths away third. followed by Lord Snow. Hit the Deck and Whakamiw The winner's experience stood him in pood stead and he jumped well. He is a brother to York Abbey and a half-brother to Cureaform. Standfast made a promising showing for a first attempt, which will cause much interest to be taken in his career as a hurdler. Sports King finished on fairly well for third after making more than one faulty jump. Hit the Deck never once looked likely, jumping badly and soon drifting to the rear. West Abbey, having his first race for several seasons, was pulled up owing to a stirrup-leather breaking at the first fence. Defeat of Lapstone. The Matanrata owner-trainer. J. Clothier, •who a year ago won the Hinuera Handicap with Lord A al. was again successful, this time with Woodful, a half-brother by Raceful to Red Comet, who was having his first outing. On the strength of good track work he was confidently supported, finishing ud second favourite to Lapstone. Lapstone quickly ran to the front on the rails and led round the turn from Star Lap. Woodful. Searcher. Wilton and London. Once into the straight Woodful drew out to win comfortably by two lengths from Searcher, with Abbey Dream half-a-length away third and Last Lap, Star Lap and Homelight next. W oodfuj is a fine, big gelding and won impressively, finishing straight and true, in 6pite of his lack of racing experience. Green rode a good race on Searcher to get second place. Abbey_ Dream and Last Lap both came from a long way back, llluminelli was never prominent, and Lapstone and Star Lap funded out ba.d]y in. the straight.

Although theis were only four runners in the Waharoa Handicap Paganelli paid a very fair dividend -when he led the field from end to end. He went very fast in the early stages and along the back hud a break of four lengrths on Flying Prince, who was followed by Tuurua and C'ruachan. Turning for home three lengths clear Jr&ganelli strode alonsi to win, easin** up by that margin, from Flying Prince. Gruachan. who was alongside Flj'ing Prince at the turn, was two lengths away third and iaurua was last. Paganelli'e performance emphasised his return to form -Flyin" Prince run a good race, but Taurua failed completely.

Lady Lulu was only balf-a-head away third, and Great Emblem and King's Archer, almost in line, were right up next. King's Archer was a arm favourite over Alloy and Valmarie wbb fifth in demand. Lady Lulu set out to win all the way and led out of the straight from Princess isede. King's Archer and Great Emblem together, Trowbridge. Alloy and Valmarie. There was practically no change along the back and crossing the top the field bunched. Lady Lulu leading into the straight from King's Archer, Princess Bede and Great Emblem together. Alloy and Valrnarie. Alloy was fighting it out with Ladv Lulu when Valmarie made her fast dash through to beat them both. The winner was sore and it was thoucht the hard gronnd would affect her. Voitre's horsemanship assisted her and ehe responded in fine style when the opening presented itself. Alloy and Lady Lulu both rail fine races and Gre at Emblem and King's Archer, who were both a little unlucky, also shaped creditably. A. G. Murray, rider of Great Emblem, lodged a complaint against R. "W. McTavish. rider of Alloy, alleging interference, but the judicial committee decided to take no action. The canteen of cutlery donated by Maiam«t* sportsmen was presented to Mr. R. T. Keid, of 'Hamilton, owner of Valmarie. by Mr. J. \V. Anderson, president of the club. Chief Lap's Victory. Illuminelli and Erination showed out first, and then Star Lap ran up last to lead into the straight from Chief Lap. Little Leslie. Erination and Sea Ruler. Chief Lap immediately drew away and won comfortably from Sea Ruler with Star Lap a fair third, and Illuminelli and Little Leslie next. Chief Lap is a good sort to be remembered and should tlo useful service for his owner, Mr. W. Casey, who raced the dam. the Marble Arch mare Sans Gene, with success nine or ten years ago. Sea Ruler did wel] under the circumstances for when his rider failed to pet him out at the start his task was made very difficult.

Instalment, an odds-on favourite in the Railway Handicap, was narrowly beaten by Ruby Dawn, who was fifth fancy in the field of seven. Huby Dawn has been very consistent this season, having won three times, including once over hurdles, and beeu placed on five other occasions, in 12 starts. Chromadvne's first win since October. whs scored in the Walton Handicap, for which Baroscope and Soloist were better backed thau he was. Getting away well he was always handily placed, but at the end Baroscope ran him to a neck and r >''enstar was only a bead away third.
