HIKUTAIA BEATS TE AROIIA. [from our own correspondent.] TE AROIIA, Saturday. To Aroha, after retaining the Goldfields Stars since the commencement of the season, was defeated to-day by Ilikutaia in a keen game by 22 points to 20. Ihe final heads were plwed amid the excitement ot the large number of onlookers present. The scores were:—Roberts, Avery. Elliott, Valentine (Ilikutaia), 22, v. Rome close finishes in the various events were witnessed by a small attendance of spectators at a carnival controlled by the Ponsonby Amateur Swimming and Life-saving Club at the Shelly Beach Baths on Saturday afternoon in dull weather. Visiting swimmers were present from Heletisville and Hamilton, several being successful in their engagements. The Ponsonby Club won the 250 yards inter-club relay championship, Hamilton being second and Helensville third. In a water polo match Ponsonby defeated Hamilton by four goals to cue. The 50 yards championship of the Ponsonby Club was won by W. F. Smith, who also ac counted for the 100 yards handicap for the points score trophy. R. Moore annexed the 50 yards inter-club handicap, and the diminutive M. Shannhan had a popular win in the 50 yards breaststroke handicap. Following were the results: — Club Championship, 50 yards.—W. [BY TELEURATH. — riIKSS association.] CHRISTC HURCH, Saturday. D. P. Lindsay broke his own New Zealand mile record at the Linwood Swimming Club's carnival to-day. The starters in the race were A. T. F. Stokes, holder of the Canterbury championship, K. Armour and Lindsay. Lindsay and Stokes swam together for 1000 yards when Stokes retired. Lindsay finished alone in 22m 59 2-ss, or 37 2-5s under his previous New Zealand record. In the 50 yards ladies' championship of Canterbury, Miss Shona Campbell won in 3'2s, breaking the existing record by l-ss. DUNEDIN HARBOUR RAGE. MISS TAYLOR WINS BATT CUP. [BY TELEC. RATH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] DUNEDIN. Saturday. Eleven swimmers, representing most of the Dunedin clubs, competed in the annual harbour race of two and a-quarter miles today for the Bntt Cup. There was a strong north-easterly breeze and a heavy swell and the water was intensely cold. The swimmers, however, had assistance from both wind and tide. The rnce was won by Miss Jean Taylor (Kiwi Club), with an allowance of 22m. Her time was 111 13m 3s. V. New-all (Dunedin Club), from scratch, finished second. His time was 5-lm 15s. this being the fastest time the race has ever been swum. O'Driscoll (Dunedin Club) swam a great race and apparently had the race won when he was overcome by cold and was hauled from the water when \vithin 200 yards oi the finishing line. AUCKLAND REPRESENTATIVES. TEAM DEPARTS FOR TIMARU. Members of the Auckland representative team tor the New Zealand swimming championship meeting, which commences at Tiniaru next Saturday, were farewelled by a number of supporters when they departed by the second express Inst evening. The team comprised Mr. L. Kenny (manager), G. Bridsoii, A. Raper. W, O. Stockley, Misses M. Farquhar, N. Stratton, P. Robertson, M. O'Moara and B. Lewin. J. Enwright and C. R. Watson will join the team later Since she established tho ~Sew Zealand record for 150 yards free style on Tuesday evening Miss Farquhar has been severely ill and it was at first thought that she would be unable to make the trip. Fortunately she recovered nutficiently to leave with tho toain.
