DEMAND FOR RELIEF.

DEMONSTRATION AT DUNEDIN 400 UNEMPLOYED TAKE PART. [BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION. 1 DUNEDIN, Friday. Over 400 unemployed took part in a demonstration at the Town Hall, and the Hospital Board office to-day, when additional relief was demanded. A mass meeting at the Town Hall was organised last night and a deputation waited on the. Unemployment Committee, which refused to hear one spokesman. The unemployed surged into the room and an acrimonious exchange between members of the committee who remained and members of the unemployed ensued. The crowd then marched to the Hospital Board offices. The board consented to hear necessitous cases, but refused the demand for relief for all. The chairman of the board, Mr. W. S. Knight, forwarded the following telegram to the Prime Minister: Deputation of over 400 waited on the board demanding more assistance than is provided by the Unemployment Board. Single men are represented to be m desperate straits now the relief depot is closed. Married people with families are also in soro straits. Strongly urge r that you extend relief granted by the Unemployment Board each \yeek and also for the fourth week."

A largely-attended meeting of unemployed was held in the Town Hall yesterday, the majority present be:ng men who had been recently dismissed from tho various mines in the Iluntly district. A committee was appointed and Mr. G. Hillman was elected president and Mx*. T. Whitakcr secretary. The Mayor. Mr. W. G. E. George, and Mr. K. Wright, Raglan County engineer, addressed the meeting. Mr. George suggested that single men be placed on farms to caso tho responsibility of the local unemployment committee and so that work could bo provided for tho married men with families out of the grants received from tho Unemployment Board. Mr. George war- if it was an opportune time to consider raising a loan for a local water supply. He said the time was most favourable with regard to finding la Dour, but owing to tho present financial position tho mattrtr had been left in abeyance for a further six months: Mr. Wright said that married men could be placed on the river water drainage scheme at 12s 6d a day, less food allowance of approximately 15s a week. In tho matter of making provision for tho single men of the district Mr. Wright said first consideration would certainly be given them. A resolution was carried: "That nn urgent telegram bo forwarded to Mr. Malcolm Fraser, Unemployment Commissioner, asking him to start men on relief schemes as soon as possible, as the men had now been three weeks idle.
