RESCUE FROM RIVER.

BOY SWEPT OFF PONY. UNCONSCIOUS WHEN SAVED. PROMPT ACTION BY YOUTH. [BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] WELLINGTON. Friday. A smart rescue from drowning in the Hutfc River was effected by iJilbert Daniel, aged 15 years, of Lower Hutt. He was one of a party which had been swimming just below' Melling Bridge, close to which there is 'a deep hole and the river being m flood the current was strong. Members of the party had left the river and gone up the bank to dress when they heard calls for help. Daniel dashed into the river where Maurice Dawson, aged 11, who was not able to swim, was vainly struggling in the deep hole. He had been riding a small pony, which he had urged into deep water and had been swept off its back by the current. He was in an unconscious condition when Daniel seized him and brought him safely ashore, where he soon recovered. Daniel had learned life-saving and knew how to handle th»» boy. Another swimmer, Miss Paton, also plunged in to the rescue, but being higher up the river than the boy, who was being swept away by the current, did not reach him before he came opposite Daniel. The boy was taken home and is littla the worse for his experience.
