KITCHEN DOORS.

The kitchen doors hear all the blether Of men and maids and wind and weather And there the knocker, night and noon, Goes quick and cheery like a tune. There gipsies bring their honeyed chatter, And pedlar folk their rubbish scatter; And strolling minstrels with their songs, And hungry beggars with their wrongs— Seek out this kindly, cosy entry; While all the poor forgotten gentry At lonely front-doors stand and wait And thence depart disconsolate. —Elizabeth Fleming.
