YESTERDAY'S AUCTIONS. PRICES OF FRUIT LOWER. Prices for most fruit sold at the Auckland City Markets yesterday were lower than at Tuesday's auctions, the only increase being in the case of strawberries, which advanced by from to 3d a chip. Values for vegetables fluctuated. There were ample supplies of most varieties of fruit. New season's pears and Cape gooseberries were available for the first time this year. Tomatoes were particularly plentiful, selling at from 2s to 4s a case. Apples came forward more freely, prices for local cookers, receding about 6d a case. The Astrachan (dessert) variety was available in considerable quantities and values fell correspondingly. Dessert plums realised from Is 6d to 3s less than previously. Ripe bananas were eagerly sought at good prices. Lemons were dull of sale. In the field produce section potatoes, cucumbers and marrows came forward freely to meet with a fair demand. Rates for potatoes, cabbages and beans advanced slightly, but cucumbers and swedes were rather cheaper than at the last sale. Poultry showed decreases in the instances of ducks and small pullets and an increase in the case of light fat roosters. Eggs were about Id cheaper at Is a dozen for A grade. Farmers' butter was unchanged. Prices for average quality lines were as follows: FItUIT.
