OTTAWA CONFERENCE.
PRELIMINARY INQUIRIES. LONDON COMMITTEE'S WORK. LONDON! Dec. 29. Apparently there is little prospect of the fulfilment of the hope recently expressed by the Secretary of State for the Dominions, Mr. J. H. Thomas, that the Empire Economic Conference at Ottawa should he held slightly earlier than was proposed. Preparations are proceeding on the assumption that the conference will begin about the end of July. Probably the proceedings will last many weeks, and the only chance of completing them within a reasonable period is to make the preliminary work as comprehensive as possible. In this connection the Dominions Office has a committee working out details of the effect of possible British preference on the produce of the Dominions, including the question of price to the consumers. Later, it is hoped, preliminary discussions with the Dominions' representatives in London will help to clarify tho i*sk which naturally is heavy.
