HAMILTON BOROUGH WORKS

SCHEME OF IMPROVEMENTS. PROGRESS DURING YEAR. [from our own correspondent. ] HAMILTON, "Wednesday. The past year has witnessed considerable activity in the scheme of improvements undertaken by tho Hamilton Borough Council. Among tho most important works already or nearly finished are tho new water reticulation system and the cutting of a level roadway through Garden Place Hill in Anglcsea Street to relieve traffic congestion in Victoria Street. The first stage in improving the water supply was completed early in tho year, when tho new pumping and filtration station was officially opened. Work is still proceeding on the largo reinforced concrete reservoir, which will bo ready for use early in tho new year. Tho Anglesea Street cutting, although used by many vehicles, will not be officially opened to traffic until the roadway lias been permanently surfaced. The spoil from the excavation lias been used in replacing the old bridge over the Macroa Gully with a wide embankment. Satisfactory progress is'being made with tho construction of the new municipal offices in Alma Street, the contract price for which is £10.032. The building will replace the old and ont-of-duto premises in Victoria' Street and should prove a handsome addition to the town. The council's scheme for permanent footpaths is being pushed on and about .seven miles of pathway have already been completed. It is hoped to he able to carry out a similar programme each year until every street in the borough is completed. Tho necessity for providing work for the unemployed has placed an added burden 011 the council's resources. For the last nine months 200 men have been employed under the No. 5 scheme each week, on mure permanent works, including the grading and construction of new footpaths. A number of men have also been engaged in. extending the paths along tho bank of tho Waikato Riyer„
