ESCAPE FROM FIRE.

HOUSE BURNED DOWN. OCCUPANTS LEAVE BY WINDOWS. Fire early yesterday morning destroyed a house in Lunn Avenue, Mount Wellington, occupied by Mr. and Mrs. Dunn and Mrs. Dunn's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ryan. AH were compelled to escape from the windows in their night attire. Between 4.50 and 5 a.m. Mrs. Ryan rose to prepare breakfast for her husband, who is a bus-driver, and subsequently found the, passage of the house in flames. She roused the others and they made their escape. When tho Mount Wellington Fire Brigade arrived flames were bursting from every part of tlm house. The brigade concentrated mainly upon saving an adjacent house and an empty garage, toward which the flames were being carried by tho wind. The furniture and effects were not insured. TARANAKI HOME BURNED. ART TREASURES DESTROYED. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] NEW PLYMOUTH, Tuesday. A large two-storeyed bouse on Carrington Road, outside the b orou gh, was totally destroyed last night in a spectacular blaze. The building was owned by Mr. N. Arthur, and the property was known as "Ratanui," being well known as one of the most beautiful adjoining the town. There was no water supply and the building burned fiercely, only a small amount of furniture and personal effects being saved. The came of the fire is not known. The loss to the owner is a serious one. Among tho property destroyed were a number of rare first editions and some art treasures. The house was particularly well furnished and there was an insurance of £3.000 on the furniture in the Atlas Office, which also held a cover of £3OO on the house, -though the full extent of the cover on the dwelling is not yet known.
