YULETIDE TRAGEDIES.
ACCIDENTS IN ENGLAND. TWENTY-THREE LIVES LOST. LONDON. Dec. 27. Twenty-three people were killed at Christmas in road and other accidents. The worst tragedy occurred at Staines, near Windsor. A car driven by Mr. Henry Burton Tate, a member of the famous sugar family, skidded and overturned into a ditch. Mr. Tate's two sons, Arthur, aged 21, and Robin, aged 19. were killed, but Mr. Tate was thrown clear. A retired school mistress was burned to death at Bayswater through her clothes being set alight while she was cooking her Christmas dinner. DEATHS IN AUSTRALIA. EIGHT CASES OF DROWNING. SYDNEY. Dec. 28. The Christmas holiday tragedies in New South Wales numbered nine, five people being drowned and four killed in motoring accidents. Three drowning fatalities occurred at Brisbane.
