COST OF EDUCATION.
Sir, —Much has recently been written and published respecting the cost of education, but there are one or two extravagant items that have nob yet been criticised. I refer to two: (1) The item of £3O per annum paid to any secondary school teacher who takes "games," a 15s per week gift for a few r.vnntes spent teaching games, whether competent or not. I myself have seen many high school pupils who had forgotten more of tennis than the teacher ever knew; and (2) the army of drill and physical culture instructors who tour the country in departmental cars, or their own cars, with a very liberal allowance of 6d per mile, I believe. What does each of these cost the country per year, all charges taken into account'! The idea of cutting down capitation expenses by refusing the right to send a child of five years of age to school and permitting the above items to go unchallenged is ridiculous. Economy.
