TRADE DECREASE.
RECENT AMERICAN RETURNS. UNFAVOURABLE BALANCE. WASHINGTON, Sept. 17. The United States had an unfavourable foreign trade balance of 1,000,000 dollars (£200,000) during August, the first such instance since 1926. : The Department of Commerce published tho following figures to-day:— The exports for August were valued at 165,000,000 dollars (about £33,000,000) compared with 297,765,000 dollars (about £60,000,000) in" August last year. The imports were valued at 166,000,000 dollars (about £33,200,000) compared with 218,427,000 dollars (about £44,000,000) last year. For the eight months ended in August the United States had . a favourable foreign trade balance of 214,153,000 dollars about £43,000,000). The exports for the same period were valued at 1,661,785,000 dollars (about £340,000,000) compared with 2,640,243,000 dollars (about £538,000,000) for the same'- period last year. The imports were valued at 1,447,632,000 dollars (about £294,000,000) as against 2,174,960,000 dollars (about £443,000,000). During the first four months of 1926 tho balances were against the States sometimes -by as much as 68,000,000 dollars but since April of that year the United States has steadily maintained a favourable balance.
