LOWER RAILWAY FARES.
LOCAL ALTERATIONS. OPERATION TO-MORROW. Full particulars of the suburban .and other local railway fare redu<j|ions, which come into force to-morrow with the general reductions,' were received yesterday by the Auckland^railway authorities. The revised suburban fare schedule shows that the specimen alterations in fares within the suburban area, as telegraphed by the Herald's Wellington correspondent on Wednesday, are tvpical of the whole. Small reductions, averaging about 3d, are also made in the return fares between Auckland and certain stations outside the suburban area, for which journeys special local fares were provided under the old scale. These stations include Taupaki, Pukekohe, Buckland, Tuakau, Opaheke, Drury, and those on the Waiuku branch. In most of such cases the special local single fares have been abolished. The special return fares between Auckland and Rotorua, namely, 47s lOd first class and 31s second class, have been abolished, the fares on the new reduced general scale being lower, namely, 41s 2d and 27s 7d. The issue of 50-trip bearer tickets is cancelled. The issue of 12-trip bearer tickets is restricted to maxilnum distances of 25 miles at six return suburban or holiday excursion fares, less 10 per cent., and to persons resident at the terminal station shown on ticket. The former discount was 12£ per cent, on the equivalent of six ordinary or suburban return fares. There is no mention of any reduction in the price of weekly 12-trip tickets.
