CHEMICAL WORKS FIRE.

SULPHUR DUST ALIGHT. WORKMEN SUPPRESS FLAMES. f OTAHUHU'S SECOND OUTBREAK. The prompt and efficient efforts of workmen at the chemical works of the Challenge Phosphate Company, Limited, at Westfield yesterday morning prevented serious damage being caused by fire in the sulphur sheds. The outbreak, which occurred about 8.45 a,m., assumed alarming dimensions and a call was sent to the Otahnhu brigade, but on arrival it found that the works brigade had the flames well under control. The fire was caused by a spark which ignited the combustible sulphur dust clinging to the woodwork of the roof and in a few minutes the flames had spread among the beams and rafters. Two fireextinguishing outfits were brought into operation and a lead was connected to the high-pressure mains. Splendid work was done by the staff, and when the Otahuhu brigade arrived the flames were under control. The damage was very small owing to the prompt action of the workmen and the management. This is the second outbreak of this nature which has occurred in chemical works at Otahuhu in the last fortnight. The previous one took place in the sulphur sheds of Messrs. Kempthorae, Prosser and Co., Limited, on Sunday week. — > EDEN TEBRACE OUTBREAK. if BRIGADE HAMPERED BY ROAD. The kitchen and part of the roof of a wooden house at 28, Randall Place, off Eden Terrace, were damaged by fire early last evening. The house is occupied by Mr. C. Taylor. It was found impossible to bring the city brigade's engine within 50 yards of the house, as the roadway is overgrown with grass and the grade is very steep. Shortly after the hoses had been connected the flames were extinguished.
