THE OYSTER SEASON.
LAST SHIPMENT ON MONDAY. CLOSING DATE NOT ANNOUNCED. The last shipment, of oysters to reach Auckland this season will be picked this morning, and will be available at the Government depot on Monday morning, when the season will probably close in Auckland. Mr. F. B. Flynn, inspector of fisheries in Auckland, stated yesterday that authority to announce the closing date of the season had been taken from him, and it would be advised from Wellington, but he could say that Monday's consignment would be the last available unless further advice was received. If the demand were heavy stocks would probably be exhausted within two or three hours. During the season supplies have been drawn from beds in the Hauraki Gulf, the Bay of Islands, and the Kaipara and Whangarei Harbours. Throughout the season consignments have been sufficient to meet a fairly good demand, while the quality of the oysters has been uniformly good. Prices have remained on a level with those ruling last year. The present season opened on July 2, while last year the opening date was June 26 and the closing date September 20.
