MR. GEORGE ARLISS.
A PERSONAL TOUCH. INTEREST IN FILM-MAKING. There can bo few great actors so thoroughly interested in their work as George Arliss. Now that he is a film star as well as a great actor (the terms are by no means synonymous), Mr. Arliss is not content merely to appear in pictures and leave it at that. lie is interested in every department of film-making. He is also a true friend of the filmgocr iu that he is willing to spend quite a lot of his time and energy in endeavouring to find ways of improving the cinema entertainment. In life, Arliss is the same courteous, kindly gentleman who is known so well through his film characterisations. " I do like to have a film with a central idea," he told ine. " In 1 The Millionaire ' tho underlying theme was tho question of premature retirement from business by a man who is not too old to work. My next picturo will discuss the problem of a rich man who finds his wealth a barrier between himself and his family." " Which film actor do you admire mostho was asked in a recent interview. Without hesitation ho replied, " T admire Charlie Chaplin more than any other screen actor I have seen. ITe can say more with his eyes alono than the majority of actors can express with the aid of voice and gesture." Mr. Arliss is to make three films this season instead of two. Tho first is definitely fixed, and he has two others in mind, lie spent a. week in Paris doing a round of tho theatres before ho returned to Hollywood this month.
