AN OLD-TIME POET.

The tercentenarv of John Donne, who led the revolt against, the Elizabethan school of poetrv, has been fitly celehrated in England, and the literary journals have devoted specaal articles to the foet and his poetr/. Donne died on March 31. 16.51. Walton has told us that, in March Donne became convinced that, he was dying. He called in a joiner and had an urn made large enough to hold his feet and a board as long as his body. Donne then stripped himself, put on a winding sheet, left open so as to reveal face and beard, took his stand in the urn. leaning his back against the board, and had himself painted in that " theatrical presentment, of life in death. The upper part of this grim portrait forms the frontispiece of " Death s Duell, ' the printed version of Donne's last sermon preached before tho King. His Majesty, it. is recorded, turned to a courtier and whispered, " The Dean has preached his own funeral sermon."
