IN MEMORIAM.
SIR GEORGE GREY. K.C.B. (Obit. September 20, 1898). As it is tne anniversary of Sir George Crey*s death on I thought perhaps this poem (which I found in an old scrap-book belonging to my grandfather) nvight be appreciated by "Girls and Boys." Margaret J. Kinahan, Kohukohu, Hokianga. Hoist half-mast high, New Zealand's flag to-day Droops eloquent in memory of Grey, Burn dim the stars that form the Southern Cross, While Queen and Empire mourn an Empire's loss. Soldier and statesman—patriot above allReady, aye ready, at his duty's call; A ruler born, a man of iron nerve, Yet for his Queen content to write " I serve." And well he served his country and his time, From Africa's sands to fair New Zealand's clime. " Friend of the people " —all mankind his kin, He recked not aught the colour of the skin. "For God!" "For Queen!" "For country!" '"For all men!' This his life's motto, this his great "Amen." A noble life—a noble aim 'tis o'er; And his reward is on the Golden Shore.
