DRAMATIC ARREST.
SHOTS FIRED BY POLICE. SAFEBREAKING TOOLS FOUND. A constable made an arrest at North 1 Sydney early on a recent morning, after j several shots had been fired, and after he i had been menaced with a pistol. Conj stables Leary and Carroll were patrolling i a street, when their attention was ati traded by the ringing of an alarm bell. They separated, and searched a number of dark lanes in the neighbourhood. Constable Leary saw a man run from the back of a warehouse. lie called upon the suspect to stop, and chased him a short distance. Then the fugitive wheeled and, drawing a pistol, threatened to shoot his pursuer. The constable halted, and tho armed man then made a desperate effort to escape. He ran through several streets, and the constable fired several shots. Finally the arrest was made. The captured man was wearing gloves. He was taken to the police station, where he was charged with shopbreaking and with having been in possession of housebreaking tools and a pistol. He stated that lie had no place of abode, and had come from Brisbane. The police allege that when he was searched several jemmies. an electric torch and keys were found in his clothing. A search near Ihe scene of the arrest resulted in the discovery of a piece of gelignite, fuses with I detonators attached, and a pistol. _ii _ j,j_. ■
