POSTAL CLERKS CHARGED.
ALLEGED THEFTS OF £3OO. TWO MEN SENT FOR TRIAL. j [BY TELEGRAPH.—-PRESS ASSOCIATION.] CHRISTCHURCH, Friday. ' The theft of sums of money totalling over £3OO, the property of the PostmasterI General, was alleged against two former I clerks in the Fost and Telegraph De I partment, James Thomas Toomey, aged i 45, and Murdoch Kenneth Campbell, aged ! 33, in the I'olice Court to-day. They 1 were jointly charged with stealing £238 17s sd. Toomey was also charged will) i stealing £34 12s 3d and Campbell with i stealing £5. It was stated that Tooinev had been a clerk regularly employed in receiving money for toll accounts and Campbell relieved liiiri during his lunch hour. It was alleged that I bey manipulated toll acI counts and that the sums of money mentioned in the charges had not been accounted for. Accused pleaded not guilty to the joint charge, and were committed to the Supreme Court for trial, bail being fixed at £3OO. with one surety of £SOO in each case. Toomey pleaded not guilty to the separate charge against him and was committed for trial. Campbell pleaded guilty to the theft charge against him separately, and was committed for sentence.
