STOCKS AND SHARES.

THE AUCKLAND EXCHANGE. DECLINE IN TURNOVER. There was a falling off in 111 o. volume of investment business on the Auckland Stock Exchange yesterday. Inquiry was of narrower extent in Government loans, but the tone held fairly steady. Unchanged rates were realised by 1937 5-j per cent. Inscribed Stock, which was done at £95 without fully satisfying re quirements. Better inquiry developed for banks during the day, and at tho final call all prominent issues were supported. Commercials were sought steadily at 13s, and although holders reduced their price 3d to 13s Id they were unable to induce business. New Zealands were turned over twice at, the unchanged price of 41s 6d. More were wanted at the same figure. Unchanged rates were made by Unions, which sold at £6 lis. Buyers' attentions in insurance were again con•fincd to New Zealands and South British. An advance of 6d to 37s in offers for New Zealands was met with a selling quotation 3d lower at 38s. South British were steady and were secured unaltered aL 50s, which was again forthcoming. Sellers continued to i.'iioto loan and agency and coals freely. Pukcmiros hardened another 6d in a transaction at 28s 6d. Supplies were temporarily absorbed and when sellers returned to tho market at tho final call 32s was asked for more. Holders again offered 28s. Firm levels were maintained for gas, but there was littlo interest in shipping or timbers, in both of which sellers greatly predominated. Breweries showed practically no change and in general investments tho only notable movement was a firming in offers for Colonial Sugars to £3O. _ _ Mining investments were quietly steady. Mount Lyells were dealt in at l4s, which represented a decline of 2s 7d on the level of the last sale in Auckland, and a fall of Is on more recent Southern transactions. CLOSING QUOTATIONS. Buyers. STOCK EXCHANGES. YESTERDAY'S SALES. RETURN ON INVESTMENTS. Following is a list of yesterday's transactions on New Zealand fe'Lock Exchanges.. In the second column is given the return, based on the last annual dividend, from investment at the quoted price. In the case of Government and other redeemable securities the return includes redemption. In calculating the returns on shares in companies which pay their dividends outside New Zealand exchange rates, being liable to fluctuations, have not been taken into consideration. The first column gives the figures at which the sales were made:— AUCKLAND EXCHANGE. Return ori Sale Price. lii\estment. £sd £ h d In?. Stock. 1937, 51 .' 95 0 0 0 10 7 Bank of X.Z. There was no marked change in the tone of tho inyestment market on the Auckland Stock Exchange this week. Turnover reached substantial proportions on several days, but the bulk of the dealing took placo in Government loans and banks. After a sudden setback early in the week, the gi!t-edged section steadied and business continued fairly actively on a basil, about 10s to 15s lower. After advancing to £95 12s 6d, 1937 per cent, bonds held at £95. Similar rates prevailed for 1937 5j per cent. Inscribed Stock, which also made the steady price of £95 for several days after having sale up to £95 17s 6d last Monday. Other lines steadied at the lower levels to which the market has fallen, and, though buying support was not so strong yesterday, rates were not materially altered for leading stocks. A slightly easier tendency continued for Bank of New Zealand shares, nine parcels of which were done at from 42s down to 41s 6d. Commercials of Australia firmed a shade to 13s, but dealing was very limited. Unions made £6 lis, and Nationals of New Zealand gained a little ground with' sales at £5 8s and £3 9s. I'ukemiros recovered Is to 28s 6d over tho week. New Zealand Drugs were substantially marked down in a transaction at 48s 6d. With the exception of steady dealing in Wailiis, mining business was on the quiet side. Wailiis, after moving up from 15s 7d to 15s 10d, the highest price they have sold at for some time, remained firmly supported. Grand Junctions showed practically no movement. THE CITY MARKETS. YESTERDAY'S AUCTIONS. BANANAS FIRM IN PRICE. i Bananas brought higher prices at the Auckland City Markets yesterday, repacked ripe fruit selling up to 25s a large case and seconds and mediums at 12s to 20s a case. A large shipment of Sydney citrus fruits a'rrived by the Ulimaroa on Tuesday. Sydney oranges brought 8s to 16s a case, mandarins 4s 6d to 7s 6d, and pineapples 8s to 12s 6d. Good quantities of apples were, agayi disposed of. Island oranges, island tomatoes and bananas met with good inquiry. The field produce section was heavily stocked with new potatoes, cabbage, celery and onions. There were adequate supplies of pumpkin, cauliflower, green peas and all other vegetables in season. Southern potatoes sold at lower rates. .A fair demand existed for most lines. Medium supplies of poultry sold readily, the prices remaining about level with those realised earlier in the week. There were no changes in the values for all grades of hen and duck eggs and for farmers' butter. Prices for average quality lines were as follows : FRUIT.
