OLD THAMES LANDMARK.
SAWMILL TO DISAPPEAR.
EARLY TIMBER TRADE RECALLED.

An old landmark of the Thames district is about to disappear. The Kopu sawmill, bo long in the possession of Messrs. R. P. Gibbons, Limited, will be demolished in the near future.
The present mill was erected in 1895, but sawmilling operations were commenced on the same site in the early days. White pine timber was exported to Australia from Kopu, a regular trade being / maintained. The lato Messrs. Bobert and John Gibbons were the pioneers of ijia timber industry in this district and for years employed several hundred men. Well-known ships that loaded at Kopu were the Kathleen, Hilda, lima and Mottume. The largest shipment taken was that loaded on the Clan McLeod.
