NEW ZEALAND TOURNAMENT,

SOME EXCITING CONTESTS

.UCKLAND COUNTRY DEFEATED

A close contest for section winners in the , New Zealand ladies' hockey tournament has been produced by the results of yesterday s frames at Remuera. In a ■ Umllinß und hard-fought match. Southland defeated the liitherto ■ unbeaten Auckland Country team by 3 goals to v2. The game in which Poverty Day drew with Wellington, joint holders with Eastern of the K Cup. was even more exciting, and spectators , were roused to the highest enthusiasm by the tense struggle. The results o£ yesterday s games were:— A SECTION. Southland, 3: Auckland Country, 2. Eastern, 5;, Akitio. 0. Manawatu. '4: Wairarapa, 1. B SECTION. Wellington, 1; Poverty Bay, 1. BEATS AUCKLAND COUNTRY. * Southland showed easily its best form in the tournament by defeating Auckland Country by 3 goals to 2. Auckland Country had gone through victoriously, having the previous day defeated Eastern, holders of the K Cup, and it was generally expected to win yesterday's game. Excellent penetration by the Southland forwards and outi standing defence by the goalie, Miss C. | Crighton, were responsible for the Aucki land'team's downfall. Southland was hard j pressed in the last quarter of an hour and ( was fortunate in not having the score i equalised. Auckland Country began promis- : ingly, Mrs. Carnac breaking away down the ! right wing and shooting, but Miss Ci"ighton I kicked clear. From the bully the Southland forward line rushed down the field i and pressed Auckland hard. Within fbree i minutes of the opening Miss M. . Clark ! eoaled for Southland with a fine shot. AuckI land immediately retaliated and the inner i forwards returned the ball again and again I into Southland's quarters. Auckland was i driven back, and from a corner Miss M. ! Hillis sent in a fast goal from near the ! edge of the circle. The score at half-tune ! wos:—Southland, 2; Auckland Country, 0. The second spell opened in a spectacular manner. After a short period of up and ■ down play Miss V. Shand dashed .down the. ] centre of the field, eluded the backs, and j sent in a stinging shot. Miss Crighton i saved brilliantly, but Mrs. Carnac immedi- ■ ately %cored from the rebound. Right from I the bully Miss M. Belsham raced down the loft wing. and. after beating the backs. | scored- with a most brilliant shot from a ! particularly difficult angle. With the score j 3_i against it, Auckland Country attacked ! vigorously and had th© beiter of the game. I After a long tussle Miss Matuschka had a shot. The goalie saved, but Miss D. Stirling scored from the rebound. In spite of vigorous work. Auckland Country was unable to add to its score, and the game ended Southland, 3; Auckland Country, ; 2.

AN EXCITING. DRAW

WELLINGTON AND POVERTY DAY

The close struggle, ending in a draw, between Wellington and Poverty Bay. roused the spectators to the highest pitch of.excitement yet shown in the tournament. An udjoining game at one stage was interrupted by side-line supporters who tried to rush across to see' a melee in Wellington's circle. Both sides played similar hockey, and, although the forward work was brilliant, the defence .was equally so. Wellington pressed from the ,bully and had; several shots at coal, but good. stickwork. kept them out. Miss M. Wilkins sent in a hard shot, but Mrs. Horsfall rose to the occasion,; making a brilliant save. . Hard Clearing by both rearguards made the game fast and* spectacular. Good work by the Poverty Bay forwards, especially Misses Lenane and Sisam. and Mrs. M. NicoL almost.' ended ; in a score, but the Wellington- defence held. Half-time camu with no score to either On' resuming Poverty Bay pressed but -Wellington cleared and its., opponents conceded a corner. From a melee in Poverty Bay's circle Miss Bilham 'cleared well and put Wellington on the defence. Brilliant, clearing by Miss M. Sisam and Mrs. Algie saved Poverty Bay and then smart work by Mrs. Nicol and Miss M. Lenane almost earned the side a score. . Miss J. vV ling took the ball to the Poverty Bay circle but her shot went over the net. The Wellington forwards were- consistent, however, and Miss D. Foreman scored, her shot giving Mrs. Horsfall no chance. A.fine rush down the centre by Miss J. Grainger %vas checked by Mrs. Horsfall. A brilliant forward movement by Poverty Bay resulted in Miss K. Te Oka equalising shortly before time, a fast and strenuous game resulting in a draw;--Wellington, 1; Poverty Bay. .1.

DISAPPOINTING GAME

EASTERN DEFEATS AKITIO

The same in... which . Eastern defeated Akitio by 3 goals to 0 was a drab arid disappointing exhibition* Although Eastern was in Akitio's quarters most of the time the match was not so one-sided as the score would indicate. Eastern lost numerous opportunities tin a Akitio made promising movements which failed through cohesion in the circle. The Akitio goali?. Miss R. Sherrand. did splendid worn for her side, saving l several shots in quick succession on occasions. No score had been made at half-time. _ Miss K. Bond was the first Eastern forward to boat Miss Sherrand, scoring with a high shot right in the corner of the goalmouth After further unsuccessful attacks Miss M. Small made ground for Eastern and passed to Miss M. White near the circle. After what could be described as a bully with the goalie. Mias White succeeded in pushing the ball past her into the Eastern's next two goals were added quickly, Misses M. Nicol and K. Bond scoring within a minute of each other. From a cross-hit by Miss M. Kieol. Miss Bond coaled again, and Hie gnnle ended with tlio score:—Eastern, "'b; Akitio, |

LACK OF FINISH.

LOSS FOR: WAIRAEAPA

Lack of finish in circle play was largely responsible for Wairarapa's _ defeat, <; by Mauawatu by 4 goals to 1. Wa.irarap.a took the offensive but cohld not keep it for long, Misß Havvea cleurim: to the Manawatu forwards, who raced down the field, Mrs. L. Seal scoring. Miss F. Booth's good defence did not avail against Manawatu, Miss W: Ransom netting. The score . athalftime was;—Manawatu. 2; Wairarapa. 0. On resuming Wairarapa took a turn at attack and although the defence held play was very even for some time. A fast run by Mrs. L. Seal had Wairarapa "in trouble and eventually Mis? B. Hnkaraia scored Manawntu's third goal. Wairarapa replied immediately, Miss 1. Booth finishing off with a'neat shot. A bi rllia'nt run "by "Miss' W. Ransom almost resulted in a score and a little later, from a melee in the circle, Mrs. Seal scored Manawatu's fourth goal, the came ending:—Manawatu, 4; Waimrapa, 1.

WANGANUI DEFEATED

GOOD WORK BY RUAHINE.

Wanganui put up a good defence Ruahine. hut was no mutch for the latter'? penetrating power. Ritaliino immediately attacked and Miss P. Baker scored from just inside th<» circle. Runhine again advanced. a Ion? shot by Miss M. Miller being saved well by the goalkeeper. The scor* at half-time was :~-Ruahine. L; "W'anganui, 0. - Wanganui attacked after the inter.val, but Mrs. Hoppi saved. Play passed to the other end and Miss I'. Baker netted with n high shot. A rush by the Ruahine forwards led to a third score by Miss M. Dennis. Miss J. Walker penetrated^'Rualiine'iJ defence and passed to Miss J. Brooks, whose nhot missed.
