GYMKHANA FOR CHARITY.

When boxers, baritones, wrestlers and bandsmen are associated on the same programme, entertainment to satisfy most ta«tes can be assured. Such wide variety wiis presented by the gymkhana staged in thu Town Hall last evening by Auckland members of the police force. The excellence of the entertainment and the' object of its promotion— to raise funds for charity—deserved a larger audience than was present. The wrestling items included exhibition bouts between Scotty McDougall and L. Bloomfield, and Tom Alley and Len Naylor. The latter bout, which concluded the programme, proved thoroughly diverting, because of the amusing showmanship introduced to compensate for the manifest inequality of the contest. Alley and McDougall demonstrated various holds. An amateui middle-weight wrestling bout between E. Munce and A. Jones resulted in a win for the former on points, no falls being secured. A light-weight bout between two other amateurs, L. Pickering and C. Kelly, was exceptionally fast and interesting. Each obtained a sub« mission fall, Pickering winning on points. There were also two exhibition boxing bouts. The first was between Archie Hughes, New South Wales professional feather-weight champion, and W. Burgess, of Auckland. Two talented brothers, R. Purdy and W. Purdy, provided the other contest.

A highly popular item was a physical drill display by a squad of 28 girls, members of the Auckland Inter-House Sports Association. Vocal items were rendered by Miss Winifred Hill, Mr. F. E. Sutherland, Mr. Ernest Snell and the Lvric Quartette (Messrs. A. McElwain, A. Hipley, H. Richards and E. Thomas), all of whom were warmly received. The Jubilee Institute and Ponsonby Boys' Bands presented several numbers.
