ASSISTING TEACHERS.
WORK UNDER NO. 5 SCHEME
POSITIONS AT SCHOOLS. Further details of the proposal to employ unemployed men teachers at schools under the No. 5 unemployment scheme were received from the Education Depait* ment by the Auckland Education Board yesterday. The department suggested that teachers should'as far as possible be attached to schools with large classes. It. was stated that they could help the class teacher by taking groups of pupils for lessons .in various subjects and they themselves would have the opportunity of observing the methods in use in classes in which they were placed. Only teachers whose names appeared 011 the teachers register should bo'employed. Teachers employed under the scheme could not be given positions of authority or responsibility. The chairman, Mr. A. Burns, said employment would be provided for only two days in a week, although a teacher could work on the remaining days without payment if he desired. Probably there would not be many teachers employed under the scheme as positions were generally available for men teachers. The board was concerned chiefly with the unemployed women teachers, of whom there was a large number. Mr. S. R. Sims urged that everything should be done to assist the scheme. He said teachers out of work would rather/* have two days a week in employment than none at all.
It was decided to. fake steps to appoint teachers who were eligible.
