OPOTIKI COUNTY NOTES.

WAJOEKA ROAD MAINTENANCE COUNCIL DECLINES LIABILITY. [FROiI OUTS, OWN CORRESPONDENT.] OPOTIKI, Saturday. Maintenance of tha Waioeka Road was discussed by the Opotiki County Council at its meeting this week. Mr. K. S. Williams, M.P., forwarded a letter from the Minister of Public Works, Hon. W. B. Taverner, in which the Minister stated the department could not maintain the Waioeka Road and suggested that the Main Highways Board be approached. The Opotiki Farmers' Union also wrote objecting to the road being handed over to the County Council. The council resolved not to take over the road. The Minister of Public Works wrote to the effect that there were no funds available for assisting to keep the Takaputahi Road open. Big slips have occurred which have cost the council a considerable amount of money to clear. The council decided to support the protest of the Auckland Farmers' Union to the diversion of the proceeds of iha petrol tax to anything but tha construction and maintenance of main highways.
