INCREASE IN TAXATION.
LEVY ON NECESSITIES, PROTEST AT HAMILTON. [FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] HAMILTON, Sunday. The Government's taxation proposals were discussed by the executive of the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce, which decided to forward the following resolutions to Mr. J. A. Young, M.P. for Hamilton : That in view of the reduced earning power of most wage-earners, this chamber protests against any increase in taxation on the necessaries of life and is decidedly of the opinion that, if heavier taxation is necessary, it should be imposed on luxury items. In the opinion of this chamber there is a considerable leakage through the non-rendering of income returns by persons with taxable incomes, and it should be obligatory on every adult to furnish a return of income, or, alternatively, to make a declaration as to the amount of income earned.
