ELECTION IN TASMANIA.
GOVERNMENT MAJORITY. LABOUR LOSES FOUR SEATS. COUNTING NOT COMPLETED. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. HOBART. May 11. It now appears that tho Nationalists won four seats from Labour at the general election. The strength of the parties in tho now Parliament is expected to bo as follows : Nationalist .. • • • 10 Labour . . . . . . . . 10 Independent . . •. • • 1 The voting was on the proportional system and the distribution of preferences cannot, be undertaken for some days, but the figures appear to indicate that the Government has gained four seats. Voting was compulsory for the first time. The Premier, Mr. .7. C. McPhec, said the voting showed that tho people appreciated tlio serious position of Australia. Tho result of the elections would help toward correcting tho unstable conditions and also should help toward the restoration of confidence. The. Leader of the Opposition, Mr. A. G. Ogilvie, said tho majority of the people had accepted the assurance of the Government that if it were returned the financial position would be improved. Tho next six months would disillusion them and they would regret their vote in the hard times ahead. The Parliament of Tasmania consists of tho Legislative Council of 18 members, elected for six years, and the House of Assembly, of 30 members, elected by proportional representation for three years. The population is about 214,000.
