INCIDENTS AT HOTELS.
YOUNG MAN'S OFFENCES. PROBATION FOR TWO YEARS. Charges of being found in a private room of a holel without lawful excuse and stealing tho sum of 2s from a room in another hotel at Otahuhu on April 15 were made against a young man, Arthur A. S. Young, in the Otahuhu Police Court yesterday. Sergeant Rowell slated the two offences were alleged to havo been committed within half an hour of each other. Mrs. Olive Lumley, a boarder at a hotel ! on April 15, said that on entering her room she found accused standing at the window. lie made the excuse that he was looking for a man. Nothing was missing from the room. Two employees at the other hotel gave evidence of having seen accused upstairs about two o'clock, shortly beforo the money was missed. Accused denied tho charges, stating ho had been directed to Mrs. Lumley's room, where he was given to understand he would find a man for whom he was looking. Jle had no recollection of having been in the second hotel, as he had had a number of drinks that day. He said there was no need for him to steal 2s, as he had withdrawn a large amount from his savings bank accouint tho previous day. Proof of this was submitted. The magistrate, Mr. F. 11. Levien, said ho was satisfied that accused had committed the offences. He would be convicted and admitted to probation for two years. Leave to havo tho name suppressed was refused.
