STOCKS AND SHARES.

THE AUCKLAND EXCHANGE. WEEK OPENS QUIETLY. Quiet trading was recorded on the Auckland Stock Exchange yesterday. The gilt-edged Section held firm, with buycis predominating for Government loans. The hanking group was firmer, buying quotations for several Australian shaies showing a distinct improvement compared with Saturday, hut no business was done. South British Insurance shares were dealt with at 51s 6d, a fall 6f 6d on the market at the time of the last Auckland sale four days ago, but 3d above the last southern sale. New Zcalands were sought at 41s 3d, which is 3d higher than the buying quotation of Saturday. The loan and agency section was again very quiet, with only two buying quotations. The market for Auckland Gas was very firm, with steady buyers at 22s 10d, the last market price. New Zealand Breweries were dealt with at 34s 3d, which is 3d below the market at the time of the previous Auckland sale. Colonial Sugars had buyers at the closing call at £33 15s, which is 5s above the price at which business was put through on Saturday. British Tobaccos had buyers at 28s 6d. Buyers offered 19s for Milne and Choyce debenture stock at the mid-day call, but withdrew at the close, when sellers were unsupported at 19s 6d, the price at which a sale was made in the South last week. New Zealand Refrigerating contributing shares gained 2d on last week's market to sell at 3s Id. Wilsons Cements gained 3d on last week to sell at 40s 3d during the morning; but a sale was recorded during the afternoon at 40s. Mining was quiet. Buying quotations for both Waihis and Mount Lyells showed a slight improvement on Saturday.
