ROYAL HUMANE SOCIETY. RESCUES FROM DROWNING. COURAGEOUS ACTS RECALLED. [BY TELEGRAPH. PRESS ASSOCIATION.] CHRISTCHURCH, Monday, The court of directors of the Royal Humane Society of New Zealand to day made the following awards for bravery : Bronze Medals.—Peter Scott Isbister, Arthur Pottinger and Lawrence Johnson, of Island Bay, Wellington, who rescued one man and attempted to rescue others fiom drowning at Island Bay on September 30, 1930. Margaret Olive Swabey, nurse, Waikato Hospital, Hamilton, for rescuing a woman from drowning in the Waikato River on October 5, 1930. Nurse Swabey, fully clothed, in the semi-darkness jumped down a bank 20ft. high into tho river in pursuit of an escaped mental patient. The bank at this spot is unscalable and the river runs swiftly and is very deep. Nurse Swabey caught Oie demented woman, who was strongly built, and pulled her to the bank. There she held on to a tree until help arrived. A certificate was awarded to Mervyn Leake, of Wellington, for rescuing a man from drowning at Evans Bay on December 26, 1930. An in inemoriam certificate was granted to the next-of-kin of Sydney Albert Longuet, of Wellington, who lost his lifo in attempting to rescue a girl from drowning in the surf at Otaki Beach. A letter from the court was issued'congratulating Clifford Gcorgo on his action. He assisted Mr. Longuet in his efforts lo rescue the girl. A certificate was awarded to Mamihiri GreunelJ, of Chatham Islands, for attempting to rescue a man from drowning on March 17, 1931. Letters of commendation were issued to Josephine Warren and Georgina Warren for rescuing a girl from drowning at Gisborne on January 5, 1931. Daphne Scheib, aged 16. of Cromwell, for rescuing a gTrl from drowning at Bluff on January 1, 1929; Ivan Turnbull and Richard (Joxon, both aged 19, for rescuing a woman from drowning at Dunedin ori November 13, 1929; William Jack Taylor, aged 17, of Wanganui, for rescuing two men from drowning at Wanganui fin September 30, 1930; and Lovey Tiako. for rescuing a boy from drowning in the Wanganui River on December 19, 1930.
