COST OF ELECTIONS.
CI.TY COUNCIL'S. SHARE.
UNFAIR BURDEN CLAIMED.
Suggestions for obviating undue burdens upon the council at local body elections were made by tho city valuer, Mr. P. F. Notley, in a report to the City Council last evening upon the working of his department.
Mr. Notlev pointed out that all the expense of electing hospital boards would be avoided if such boards were composed of persons nominated by the contributing local bodies. This system was already used in the case of fire boards. The present arrangement for electing liospital boards amounted to "taxation without, representation.'fSo far as tho Harbour Board, transport Board and Power Board were concerned. these bodies paid for their own elections, but the City Council was required to provide the rolls for the city area. This wasi a very expensive item, the cost, in 1929 having been £I7OO. The Finance Committee tecommendnrl that the council should renew its application for legislative authority calling upon the other / local authorities in tho city to share the cost of compiling and printing the electors' roll, and also making the .Auckland Hospital Board liable for a proportion of tho costs of municipal elections.
