CHIMES BY MICROPHONE.

PROPOSAL AT MASTERTON.

REPLACING BOROUGH CLOCK. Now that the Masterton post office tower, which houses the borough clock, is to be demolished, it was suggested at a meeting of the Masterton Borough Council this week that the council should instal in several parts of tho town clock faces electrically controlled by a master clock, and by means of a microphone and amplifier broadcast the chimes. Tho borough engineer said the system would cost slightly less than half the cost of a new tower in which to house the present clock, which was valued at about, £9OO. Jit would take the best part of that sum to erect a tower for the clock. The scheme proposed would eliminate a tower altogether. There was a prospect of selling the post office clock. The master cloc'k could be placed in the municipal buildings, • A committee was appointed to consider the proposal.
