MANAWATU MEETING.

TRACK WORK AT AWAPUNI.

LA POUPEE'S GOOD GALLOP.

A SMART FIVE FURLONGS.

[Br TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION'. ] PALM BRSTON NORTH, Thursday.

A cold easterly wind made matters uncomfortable for training operations at Awapuni this morning, but the tracks were hard and fast. Tlio majority of candidates worked on tho plough, which had plenty of dirt on top, although the course proper was also in use, tho flags being wido out. On the plough Pythin, and Wallaruh were associated over seven furlongs, tho former drawing away in tho straight to run the distance in 1.33.

Pahu, alone, ran a mile in 1.47}. The Wnrplane gelding may be better for a race. lied Fuchsia was going better than Llyn Du at the end of five furlongs in 1.6 3-5, both carrying big poundages. Keddar left eix furlongs behind in 1.22. after running tho first furlong in 14 3-ss. Blue Paper ran five furlongs in 1.6 without being unduly taxed. A bad jump off gave Llandudno a big advantage over Otairi. The former was still clear at the end of six furlongs in 1.20 3-5. Lady Quox broke 38s while running threo furlongs. Wnvzone and Elicit were on terms at the end of seven furlongs in 1.33. Blacksmith left five furlongs behind in 1.6.

Park Acre finished in front of a Starstream maro at tho closo of eix furlongs in 1.24.

Consent, with his trainer in the saddle, recorded a good effort in running five furlongs in LIS.

Courtesy cantered round prior to running tho last threo furlongs in 30s. Chrysnlogy ran half a mile in 525.

On the courso proper La Poupee finished better than Teller over fivo furlongs, with Chief Cook right up, after tailing behind in the early stages. They ran 1.4 2-5 a smart, performance. Toxeuma, unaccompanied, was travelling comfortably at the end of five furlongs in 1.5.

Aspian was too good for Chief Clerk while running five furlongs in 1.5 3-5. Rapallo held an advantage over Primo Moutoa at the closo of five furlongs in 1.6 1-5, but carried a lighter poundage. There was little between Lordlike and Moutoa Treasury at the end of eix furlongs in 1.19 4-5.

Spearopa was tho only one asked to jump, being eent a round, but his jumping is still open to improvement. A big team arrived from Trentham yesterday, but .few wore asked to gallop this morning. Limerick and Laughing Prince were the early workers, but Nightmarch appeared after breakfast. The three Cup horses look in great order.

TAKANINI TRACK NEWS.

CHIEF JEWEL FOR AWAPUNI.

RETURN OF BRONZE EAGLE. The weather was fine and the tracks fast at Takanini yesterday, but there was only a little fast work, the inner grass being used for galloping. White Wings and the two-year-old Bugle Call were allowed to cover a few furlongs at three-quarter speed. White Wings looks very bright and Bugle Call is now furnishing noticeably. Chief Jewel and the Yalkyrian—Podokes gelding were on terms at tho end of five furlongs, but Chief Jewel was doing his work easily all the way. Ill* the Shade, who looks exceptionally well, was allowed to stride over r mile easily in 1.51. Ho promises to strip in good order at the Easter meetings. Hard Words, whoso soreness has gradually vanished, was given an easy five furlongs, which occupied 1.8 3-5. He is still backward, but is now commencing to shape up and may bo ready for a public outing within the next few weeks.

Camp Prince (Leach) was coins better than Taurua (Stewart) at the end of five furlongs in 1.3 4-5. Both these horses are improvias in condition, and Camp Prince may soon sot his turn in the weaker classes. Wee Betty strode easily over five furlongs, the last half-mile in 535. Sho is in good order and is expected to race within the next month. J. T. Jamieson returned from Trentham on Wednesday. Chief Joy and Eaglet were brought home, and King March, Columba and Kefresher remained in the South to race at the Manawatu meeting at the week-end. Clopton will 'be Jumieson's representative in the Tauranga Cup and Ti Tree will start in the Greerton Handicap. E. Keesing will rido the pair to-morrow. The two-year-old Chief Jewel was sent to Palmerston North last night to keep his engagement in the Sires' Produce Stakes. He has been working freely and is expected to race well. J. Gray returned Takenini yesterday with Havering and Bronze Eagle, who wiU not race at Awapuni. Their next outings will be at tho Auckland Easter Meeting. Rosshire'a breakdown is' thought to be a serious one and ho will have to bo spelled. This is bad luck for his connections, as the Catmint gelding was just coining to his best. SUSPENSION REDUCED. K. VOITRE REINSTATED. The term of suspension imposed on K. Vokro by tho Rangitikei Racing Club has been reduced by the Wanjranui District Committee, and the Awapuni lightweight will ride Refresher and Columba at the Manawatu meeting. R. S. Bagby. who is in charge, of Jamieson's team at Awapuni, will have the mount on King March. SADDLE POSSIBILITIES. OUR THORPE REPRESENTATIVES. There is a rave collection ot Our Thorpe descendants figuring in the rnilo saddle event nt Thames, namely, Oliver Thorpe, Jersey Thorpe. Judy Thorpe, My Thorpe and Tiny Hose. Tiny Rose, Jersey Thorpe and My Thorpe liavo won races, while Oliver Thorpe and Judy Thorpe havo been in a minor place. Oliver Thorpe, off the front, and with tho services of the best youthful rider seen »l Essoin (or nyniy a long day. should keep the others busy. Twelve months ago J. T. Paul tired of frying to persevere with My Thorpe, and he gave the big pacer away. Nothing has been heard of My Thorpe since, but that his new owner intends racing him again is evident from hi 3 appearance in the entry list for Thames. My Thorpe won a couple of races for Paul and on other occasions was in a minor place,, but ho was not at all dependable and with the colours up he showed a disinclination to do his best. My Thorpe may have improved with ago but unless he has become solid his prospects will not be seriously entertained, although he may suit himself to saddle conditions better. Tiny Rose, making her initial appearance in a caddie race, ran third to Gaza and Nathaniel ill the Puriri Handicap nt Thames last year. A few weeks Inter at VVanganui Tiny Hose won o similar event, registering •2.1S 1-5 from a 2.25 mnrk, and defeating Rita Thorpe, who had won well on the first day. and Fliton, a Hawke's Bay pacer who can show a lot of speed for a mile. Tiny Rose gave a glimpse of form when started at Claudelnnds in the spring, and from a. 2.22 marl: she should prove a hard one to keep out of a dividend in the Puriri Handicap again to-morrow week.
