OHINEMURI MEETING.

COMMENTS ON THE FORM. CONSISTENCY OF QUINSILIA. BIDDY'S BOY WINS WELL. "With a decrease of approximately 33 1-3 ,per cent, in the totalisator turnover, the Ohinemuri Jockey Club's meeting would be less successful financially than for some years past, although the satisfactory receipts from gates and ether sources should ensure a fair profit. The meeting was a complete success from a sporting point of view and the actual racing proved highly interesting. Clono finishes wero an outstanding feature :»nd this wa3 particularly so on the second day, when the judge had some very exciting; contests to decide.

At the To Arohs, meeting a few weeks ago Quinsilia performed consistently in running second in the hurdle race on the first day and winning on the second day, and he was responsible for a similar performance at. this meeting, when he emphasised the fact that he is a solid and improving hurdler. Quinsilia has raced consistently well since he had his attention turned to hurdling for two wins, two seoonds and a third in five starts, and he is undoubtedly one of the most promising jumpers seen out at the recent meetings.

When Marble King contested the Handicap Hurdles on the first day he faded out in the straight aftej- showing a bold front mo3t of the way, and when he had to tackle a longer distance ori the second day there was no disposition to favoiTr his chance. However. the run on tho first day had improved him a good deal and he registered a better effort at the second attempt, when ho just went under to Quinsilia by a nose. Marble King has the size and speed to make n good hurdler, and. although there is a doubt, about his stamina; T. Morriss should be able to place him to advantage in the next, few months. Glaremore Unlucky. Any chance Claremore possessed in the Second Handicap Hurdles was extinguished when ho was saueezed on to the rails after running up behind the 'eader near the seven furlongs post. Claremore was going really well at the time, but he was completely unbalanced by the bump and failed to show any dash afterwards. It is reported that he was very sore after he had cooled off, but a short respite should put him right again. There are few of the younger jumpers who can stay like Claremore, and. in spite of his defeats in his latest outings over hurdles, he might be a profitable horse to follow at tho mtumn and winter meetings. On the occasions on which she hns raced at distances beyond a. mile Gay Idea has performed very solidly, and she gave further evidence that she is likely to stay by finishing soundly to dead-heat with Grand Talk in the Hikutaia Hack Cup. "With a little luck in the running she might have won outright, and something better may be expected of her before the close of tho season because she hasi not yet reached the top of her form. Gay Idea may prove very useful over micldle distances next season, when a good handicap might not be beyond her. Grand. Talk Surprises. One of the surprises of the meeting was the forward running of Grand Talk, who displayed marked improvement upon any of her previous efforts by dead-heating with Gay Idea in the Hikutaia Hack Cup. A lucky run on the rails assisted her considerably. but her performance was encouraging, and, now that r.ho has shown a glimpse of form, she can be expected to go on to something better. Grand Talk is a shapely three-year-old filly by Grandcourt from Tall Talk and belongs to a family that has been represented by many good winners. Her dam is a full-sister to Bobrikoff, and, like some of her relatives, Grand Talk may relish middle distances when her powers reach full development.

Easily the bent of the two-yenr-olds seen out at the meeting was Speedmint, who won the two juvenile handicaps, and she is a filly likely to develop useful staving form when she is more matured. On the second day she had little to spare ot the finish, but she displayed plenty of courage at tbe finish, where she was hampered by being carried out almost to -he outside rail. By Catmint from Serita Thurnham. Speedmint has an abundanco of staying blood in her pedigree and her future should be full of possibilities. Speedmint now has three successive victories to her credit, and. although she may not be really good, she is undoubtedly very useful. Solidity of Sir Mond. It is doubtful whether there is a liorse in the Dominion who has had more racing in the poet few months than Sir Mond and the way he has come through a very strenuous campaign is surprising. He was having his thirty-third start this season when ho won the Shaw Memorial Handicap, and only a horse with a :remarkable constitution could raco and, look so well ofter such a strenuous ordeal. Sir Mond waß not a great success in his first two seasons' racing, but ho has now developed into a solid racehorse and has well repaid his connections for persevering with him. His winnings to date amount to £1685. and he will only require to maintain hiß present form to add considerably to that total.

Without having nny the best of the luck either day. Brazanna ran two good races in tho juvenile handicaps, and her second on the concluding day was given added merit by reason of the fact that she. met with some .trouble at the start. Brnznnna has been very patiently handled by C. Morse, and, now that, sho is beginning to race solidly, she should reward the trainer for his patiejiee. because sho has undoubted speed and is now running on much better than formerly.

Puriri Park's Efforts. Although beaten into second place in both his races, Puriri Park ran two solid races and ho appeared to be a trifle unlucky to lose on the second day, when he drew the extreme outside in a field of Ifi and just failed to concede two stone to Holly Holm. Nothing like the best has yet been seen of this three-year-old, whoso future" appears very bright. Before the autumn meetings are over he should improve sufficiently to display better form than he has yet revealed, and when next season comes nldng ho should be capable of taking his place in good handicap company. One of the unlucky horses of the current season hns been Biddy's Boy, who has kept well up in the weights in the hock class by running consistently good races to fill minor places. Deciding that Biddy's Boy might be more favourably placed under a light weight in tho open cliiss, A. Cook pave liini an opportunity of showing his worth among the open sprinters in the St. Patrick's Handicap. Biddy's Boy turned the chance to good account and he outpaced tho others to take the lead quickly and win running away. It wan a pleasing performance ill spite of the fact that the class was not particularly strong, and further' victories for the three-year-old over short courses can be confidently expected.
