WAIKATO STOCK MARKET.

BETTER DEMAND FOR SHEEP. DAIRY HEIFERS MOVING. Notwithstanding very frequent threateninga, no rain of any consequence has fallen. Pastures seem dry. but cannot bo called scant and stock everywhere appears to bo thriving. The rise in wool, although too late to affect this season's operations, has nevertheless spread a feeling of confidence, and those who have postponed purchase in expectation of continued decline may find the delay costly. Advices from adjacent districts indicate that already.a forward movement has begun. In the cattle section we appear to bo still on tho down grade without anything in prospect likely to assist recovery. Big sales are scheduled during tho next month or so. Conditions as they affect the individual sections are as follows : , BEEF.

Very unstable conditions exist in nil centres. At the central yards on Tuesday competition was weaker and values declined from Is tc 2s per 100. Prime ox made from 19s to 20s; plain. 16s; prime heifer, 19s; prime cow, 16s; plain, 11a to 13s. MUTTON. At the central yards this week the market was a little easier, due probably Mo the fact that heavy supplies were recently purchased in the paddocks. Very few prime sheep were penned. Existing values are: — Beat wethers, to lis 6d ; plain quality, from 9b 6d; best ewes, to 7s; plain, from 5s 3d; unfinished, 4s; best, lambs, to 13s 6d; medium, 103 to lis 6d; small, from 6b. STORE CATTLE. Extreme dullness everywhere prevails and grown bullocks now sell for less than the value of calves 12 months ago. The position at the moment seems hopeless, but it is generally at such times that changes coma and a substantial export order, which is always a possibility, would quickly alter the situation. Good competition up to their low export value exists for boner cows and fleshy bulls. Jersey heifer calves also are popular, but nothing olse arouses the least enthusiasm. Grown steers sell up to £4 10s; 2J-year steers, £3 5s to £3 15s; 18-months. £2 to £3; fresh cows, £2 to £2 15s; stores, £1 to £1 10s; Jersey heifer calves, best, to £2 10s; medium, £1 5s to £1 12s 6d; small, from 15s; Shorthorn steer calves, 15s to £1; Holsteins, 10s to 15s. DAIRY HEIFERS. The Taranaki stock companies have been successful in inducing a few Waikato buyers to make purchases in the southern province. Trade is not so freo as at this period last season nor are values so high. Not a great amount of business has been done locally, but there is a fairly good inquiry and with a slight lowering of quotations business might result. STORE SHEEP. Sheep of all classes show a firming tendency and at, the Frankton fair on Wednesday an nil round advance was registered. The total yarding was cleared without difficulty. Values are:—Two-tooth ewes, best, lis fid to 13s; small, from 8s 6d; 4-year ewes. 9s to 10s; 5-year ewes, 7s to 8s; aged, 3s to 4s 6d; 2-looth wethers, best, to 8s fid; small, from 7s; best lambs. 6b to 7s; medium, 4s 6d to 5s fid ; small, 3s to 3s 6d. PIGS. Apart from minor fluctuations at the different sale centres there is no alteration to report. A fairly steady markot exists. Best baconers sold up to £2 13s; porkers, from 35s to £2 2s.
