FEWER POLITICIANS.
SMALLER PARLIAMENT URGED APPROVAL OF BUSINESS MEN. The suggestion that ,a drastic , reduction in the numbers of members of both Houses of Parliament would be an effective means of ccoiromy at the present time was put forward in a letter from Mr. R. L. Ziman that was considered by the council of the Chamber of Commerce yesterday. The council agreed to pass the suggestion on to the Associated Chambers of Commerce with the recommendation that it should take action along the lines suggested. Mr. Ziman pointed out that the Legislative Council consisted of 40 members, and he claimed that it would function equally well —possibly better—if the number were 20. This" reduction could be brought about in a few years if no fresh appointments or .reappointments were made. The number of European representatives in the House of Representatives was fixed at 76 in 1900, and he proposed that it should be permanently reduced by half by >■ combining adjoining electorates in pairs. The saving to the Dominion would not merely be the substantial sum represented by the salaries and incidental expenses of 38 members of but the saving by. reason of the shortening of sessions and improved efficiency of Parliament generally.
