PARAPET OF 125 TONS.
DANGER IN EARTHQUAKE.
ENGINEER ADVISES REMOVAL.
A report on the stability of parapets and cornices on the municipal building at Masterton was submitted to a, committee of the Masterton Borough Council this week by the engineer, who stated that the parapet was of . brick construction, and depended almost entirely on gravity for . its stability and was in no way braced to the roof. The approximate weight of the whole parapot • was 125 tons and it would without doubt collapse into the street in the event of an earthquake such as was experienced in Hawke's Bay. The engineer said that' to remove the parapet would certainly spoil the architectural effect of the building to a marked degree, but in view of tho experience of Hawke's Bay he considered it should be removed. The report was referred to the Works and Finance Committee of the council. The council also decided to insure its buildings earthquake loss.
