CLOSE DIVISION.
MINES DEPARTMENT VOTE.
GOVERNMENT MAJORITY FIVE. (Received March 15, 5.5 p.m.) British Wireless. RTJGHY, March 14. There was a closo division in the House of Commons after a debate on the Mines Department supplementary estimate. In a small House the Government's majority fell to five. The division was taken on an amendment to reduce the vote. Criticism was mainly directed against tho payment of £7OOO a year to Sir Ernest Cowers as chairman of the Coal Mines Reorganisation Commission.
The amendment was defeated by 173 votes to 168. The minority included nine Labour members. Twenty Liberals voted with the Government.
