COST OF PETROL.
DEPARTMENTAL INQUIRY.
STATEMENT BY MR. FORBES.

TAtJRANGA, Saturday. The Tauranga County Council has received a reply from the Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes, tg a letter relative to the cost of petrol arid motor fuels, in which the view was expressed that there was more than a profitable ; margin between the landed cost and the cost to the consumer. The council*!! letter was sent after a conference between the Whakatane, Opotiki and Tauranga County Councils. The Prime Minister says: "Ths matter is one of considerable importance, and during the passing of the Customs Act Amending Act last year I promised the House that an investigation into petrol prices would be made during the recess. , I arranged _with th® Minister of Industries and Commerce accordingly. "The Minister informs me that an investigation is now being carried out by officers of his department. Tho report to . be subsequently submitted will receive my careful consideration."-
