EPSOM TRACK WORK

PREPARATIONS FOR THAMES.

Conditions were favourable for training operations at Epsom on Saturday morning, when some useful work was witnessed. With the exception of three or four Thames Cup candidates, there was no attempt at fast times, and the majority showed most speed on the final circuit. Benefice (K. Morrison) jumped away at the mile and a-half post and before going a furlotig Jock Bingen (F. J. Smith) set off in front of her. Benefice ran the opening quarter in 375, but before the half-mile was reached Jock Bingen broke and took some time to settle down. Benefice passed the mile post in 2.17. and turning on the speed in fine style registered 1.5 for > the final half. The mile and a-quarter showed 2.45 and the full journey 3.22. After he settled down Jock Bingen trotted in great style, traversing the last lap at a 2.12 mile gait. . . ,

Mignonne (L. McMahon) and Explosion (W. Clifton) were companions in a solid essay over several circuits. Timed over the middle stages, when the pace was on, they covered half a mile in -1.-8-}, and the succeeding one in I.GJ, making 2.15 for a mile. Explosion trotted "in resolute stylo and held his own with Mignonne, who paced attractively throughout, ' Nelson Tasker (W. Brain) was unhoppled while negotiating three Japs at a useful-clip. Allowed to run along the final circuit he showed a 2.17 mile, gait. Nelson Tasker is still carrying a good deal of condition. Nella Dillon's Cup Trial. Mr. Penalty (F. J. Smith) and Pavlova (C. Snaith)'were not hustled over'the •first section of a mile and a-half task, bur for the next half they registered 1.14. Running along the back quarter in 355, Mr.-Penalty left his feet and Pavlpva came home easily in 1.13. The' marg could have done a* lot better if required. , Dad's Hope' (W. Clifton) and Moko'Chief (W. Evans) worked together for a mile on even terms at a sound pace. The pace was turned on over the next four furlongs. Dad's Hope doing best to reach the post in 1.8, and Moko Chief taking a second longer. Nella Dillon (T. M. Eobertson) was responsible for a useful work-out over two miles, which was accomplished at a .fairly even gait. She ran the opening half in 1.13J and the next one in 1.13." The third half-mile again showed 1.135, and the mare came home the last section in 1.13, recording 4.53 for the full distance." In company Nellfi Dillon would do a lot better, and she is a possibility for the Thames Cup, Prince Etawah (A. Shepherd) was not hurried over the first portion-of a twelve furlongs task, but the speed' was increased from the mile post. The colt ran the half in 1.9, but was stopping at tho end of the mile, which occupied 2.19. Prince Etawali is still somewhat lacking in stamina. Gold Treasure's Sound "Work,

Gold Treasure (L. Lav2r) and Eolfe Audubon (T. Carlyon) were companions in * Bound essay over several circuits, but were not asked to display anything; approaching their best speed. Both pacers are in good shape to undertake more serious work. . Golden Huia (0. Hill) trotted steadily over a milo and a-half, but was not extended beyond a 2.10 milo clip. The mare is bearing a wcll-conditioncd appearance. Dun Direct (A. Patten) was - caper for his task over threo circuits, but was held jn check until tho final lap, which he traversed at a 2.20 milo speed. Curl Mack (C. Smith) and Miss Braesido (F. J. Smith) wero associated over a mile and a-half, but a couplo of breaks by each marred tho efTorl from a time point of view. Kcv,pie's Triumph (J. Gee) and Crystal (IC. Bell) wero together for twelve furlongs, which they traversed in 3.33, when tho grey, was casecß up. Continuing for another half on his own, tho three-year-old leached tho post in 1.10. Margaret Wallace (E. Sandall) and Modern Light (S. Phipps), the latter unhoppled, worked steadily over several circuits, but neither was fully extended 'at any stage. Phipps ia not lftirrying Modem Light and the mare is shaping up nicely.
