BOWLING.

FINAL OF CHAMPION PAIRS.

WEST END CLUB SUCCESSFUL.

REMUERA EASILY DEFEATED,

The final, game in the Auckland Bowling Centre's pairs championship was played on the Carlton green on Saturday. and resulted in an easy ■ win for West End (I. Clarko and Ci E. Hardley), who defeated Remuera (P. Macfarlane and lif Russell), by 30 to 6. From the start West End dominated a game for which tho conditions were ideal. The winners were playing at tho top of their form, and after the first few heads never looked like being beaten. Tho West End lead, Clarke, paved tho way in a most pleasing manner for the subsequent successful results. Ho was ably assisted by his skip, who proved himself on tho day's play to bo equal to anything on tho board, whether it was to draw, drive or run. It would certainly have taken a very powerful combination to have beaten tho West End pair on their Saturday's display. On tho other hand, tho Eemuera pair played a long way below form, and from tho outset wero plainly troubled by tho fast condition of tho rink. Macfarlane was outclassed by Clarke, and this was tho reason of the defeat. Russell, with the position against him, wds hard put to it, but with the failure of- his run shots, which ho plays well on a slower green, tho position was mado much worse, and it was small wonder that ten heads were played, before a score was registered in his favour. The winners put up a remarkably good performance in going through the tournament without a single defeat. Altogether nine wins wero secured, and this fact was stressed by the president of tho Auckland Centre, Mr. J. M. Thomson, who presented the prizes to tho winners at the conclusion of tho game. Mr. Thomson congratulated them on their remarkably fine allowing. Tho contest opened badly for the Remuera team, tho West End combination displaying an all-round superiority over tho first ten heads. Russell failed to register up to this 6tagc\ tho score being 18 to 0 in Hardley's favour. Clarke secured a toucher with his first bowl on tho eleventh, Macfarlane failing badly. Russell sent tho jack back with his first bowl and lay one shot. Hardley drew tho absolute, but Russell took it out with a run. Hardley mado his first failuro and, Russell, drawing another, Remuera notched two points, its first score. Russell obtained a further two on tho next head, but Hardley wiped off this with a similar number on tho thirteenth. Hardley still maintained a hold on the game and the score read 22 to 5 in West End's favour at tho completion of the fifteenth head. The contest had lost its interest now with tho result practically a foregone conclu'sion. Tho final scoro was;—Hardley, 30; Ruesell, fi.
