ROYAL SQUADRON'S EVENT.

GOVERNOR-GENERAL'S CUP.

VICTORY FOR THE ARIKI.

Three harbour events were hold by the Iloyal Rest Zealand Yacht Squadron on Saturday afternoon, a race for first-class yachts for a cup presented by the GovernorGeneral. Lord Bledisloe, a general handicap for second-class yachts, and a race for class M l ' for youth 3 under 21 years of age. Ariki won the Governor-General's Cup and Windward accounted for the race for secondclass yachts. Maratea wa3 the winner of the M class contest. All races started and finished off Kind's Wharf and were sailed under ideal weather conditions. Details are as follows:

The race for first-class yachts brought out

Ariki./Nga-Toa, Prize, Thelma and Ida. The start was a good one. Nga-Toa cross- . ing the lino first, closely followed by Ariki. Thelma, Ida and Prize. On the lead to the Bastion beacon Nga-Toa was passed by Ariki and Thelma, the last-named also pass, ing Ariki. Rounding the Bastion for the run to Saltworks buoy ill Ramritoto Channel the order was Thelma. Aftki, Nga-Toa. Ida and Prize. There was no chango in tho positions of the boat 3on this leg of the course, the times rounding Saltworks beacon being:—Thelma, 3h 16m 40s; Ariki, 3h 17nj 10s; Nga-Toa, 3h 17m 41s; Ida, 3b 19m 6Ss; Prize, 8h 21m 12s. The southerly wind gave the boats a beat back to . the Bastion. Thelma carried on starboard tack for a few minutes and then threw round on port, afterwards going back on starboard, working about mid-channel. Ariki kept on starboard, making a long hoard on the Rangitoto shore, which proved a good move as when she broke tacks to lay her raark she headed Thelma. _ Ida and Nga-Toa also worked the Rangitoto shore, while Prize stood across the channel toward Na.rrow Neck and then came round on starboa.rd. The times marking the turn at the Bastion for • the second run to the Saltworks beacon wetre: —Ariki, Sh 51m 20s: Jlh s'2m 31)3: Nga-Toa. 3h 56m 46a: Prize. <th lm 235; Ida. 4h 7m 50s. Thelma closed on Ariki on this leg of the course and there was very little between them at the Saltworks beacon. When sheets were flattened, however, Ariki again drew away from Thelma nnd gradually improved her position. The/ raco started at 2.30 p.m. The finishing times were:—Ariki (sor), 5h 15m 13s; Thelma (90s), 5h 21m 535; Nga-Toa f4mh 6h 24m 18s: Prize (llim), 5h 38m 12s; Ida (16m). 5h 52m Sis. SECOND-CLASS YACHTS

In tho race for second-class yachts Wairiki crossed the line first and was closely followed by Lndye Wilma, Windward. Kotiri, lona. Little Jim and Waione. Kotuku was 1m late. Ladye Wilma passed Wairiki on the lead to the Bastion and was still in charge at Saltworks. Rounding this mark tho order was Ladye _ Wilma. Kotiri, Windward, Waione. Little Jim. Wairiki, lona and Kotnku. Only seconds separated the first four boats as they made the turn for the beat back to the Bastion. Windward gradually overhauled the leaders and fought out a close finish with Kotiri. „ . , The raca started at 2.45 p.m. The finishing times were:—Windward (2m 30s). 5h 5Gm 593: Kotiri (lm), 5h 57m 83; Waione (scr), ,511 58m 21s: Ladye Wilma (303). 5h fifim 46a; Little Jim (lm). 6h 2m 2s: Wairiki (sm). 6h 8m 51s; Kotuku (11m). 6h 11m 233; lona (6m). 6h 11m 383. SUCCESS OF MARATEA

The rnce for class M brought, out seven competitor i which were sent' away to an excellent 'start. Manene was first over the line and close on her stern came Maroro. Manu, Matarere, Mawhiti, Memutu and Maratea. ' Memutu was first to the Sandspit beacon and continued her lead until the seconci time round the course when she was passed by both Maratea and Matarere oh tie beat from the Sandspit to the Resolution buoy. Manene and Mawhiti collided in the first round and retired. The rafee started at 3 p.m. The finishing timeß were:—Maratea. 4h 11m 225; Matarere. 4h 11 oi 395; Memutu. 4h 12m 40s: Maroro, 4h l!!m 535; Manu. 4h 14m 565. Result:—Maretea. 1; Matarere, 2; Memutu, 3. The/.officials in charge of the racing were: Messrs. .T. It. Frater. G. D. Deery. C. T. Trevithick, C. V. Connolly and J. T. Gar rett.
