CHINESE SHIP LOST.
SOLDIERS CAUSE EXPLOSION.
231 PEOPLE KILLED. (Received March 13, 12.35- a.m.) SHANGHAI. March 12. A revenue cruiser, the Chuontiao. arrived at Shanghai to-day with 119 survivors of a small Chinese steamer, the Tachi, which was blown up 60 miles from here. There were 350 passengers on the ill-fated vessel, of whom 100 wero soldiers, who had boarded her at Woosung. The soldiers took possession and scattered lighted cigarette ends indiscriminately. These ignited the cargo of cotton and the flames caused a terrific explosion. ® The Chuentiao was rushed to the scene and her crew rescued the survivors. The remainder perished. Seven bodies were recovered.
