BOYS AND AIR-GUNS.
POSSESSION NOT LAWFUL. MISCHIEF IN WELLINGTON. The fact that Wellington magistrates have lately had to deal with several cases of mischief with firearms constitutes a warning to parents who might be inclined to buy their boys air-rifles of different descriptions.
Under the Police Offences Act it is not lawful to sell or supply firearms of any kind, including air-guns, to persons under the age of 16 years. However, when parents go into a shop and buy an air-gun for their son, the shopkeeper cannot be held liable. Consequently, through their parents, boys*get possession of air-guns and perhaps fire at windows or oth°r boys. If parents generally realised that no child under 16 years of age is allowed by law to have oven an air-gun winch fires pellets, a great deal of trouble would be saved. In addition, children would be spared the ignominy of having to go to Court, in which event there is no alternative for the magistrate but to confiscate the firearm concerned.
